Kala Ghoda Festival 2012 - FUSION BONANZA

Kala Ghoda is an area in South of Mumbai which houses places like Jehangir Art Gallery, National gallery of Modern Art, Max Muellar Bhavan. This place has always been melting pot for Art lovers and it is because of this love for Arts that Kala ghoda Association which is an NGO, in 1999 started Kala ghoda Arts festival, now in its 13th year. The Kala ghoda association states its objective as "physically upgrading the Kala Ghoda sub precinct and making it a Art district of Mumbai"

The festival which was held from 4th to 12th Feb 2012, is usually held every year in late January or Mid Feb at Kala ghoda which not only attracts tourist locally but also international tourist. Since 1999 the festival has grown its popularity attracting visitors and participants from across India. Its no longer an art festival but has grown to become a street festival with fusion of Arts, dance, music, theatre, films. They also conduct workshop, seminars, heritage walks and also special events for children. The pics below showing the atmosphere at the festival. "THE FUSION BONANZA"

The reason I included this event in my blog is because the festival is so vibrant that its more like an adventure exhibiting Gallery & pavement shows, painting and sculptures, street shows and music shows, dance and theatre performance and also food fiesta from different restaurants across Mumbai like Chetana's, Copper Chimneys etc.

Here are some of the installations during this year's festival - Aim to create awareness or social message.                                             BISLERI BOTTLE LATTERN.

Street artist performing at the festival.

Even Mumbai Police had a stall showing paintings and pictures clicked by policmen.

CRY- an NGO  also had a stall conveying the message to Fight Undernourishment in children "Little by Little".

Little by Little from CRY
The pics below were by far the best installation in the festival conveying the message to drop "DOUBTS, SADNESS, FEAR in the dustbin.

Another amazing message "LET THERE BE LIGHT" by various artist showing BUDDHA suspended in air. It was "WOW" way to convey the message.

Message from VIKRAM ARORA about corruption. "UNDER THE TABLE"

The handcart which is used even today to carry goods across Mumbai, shown in very different way where it can also be something of "COMFORT".

Somethings that we used to see very often on the streets decades back but now is fast dying out.

DRUMS, BUDDHI KE BAAL & PAPER WIND MILL

Kalaghoda festival was more than just the pics that I could click above. Fusion of Dance, Music, Street plays, Melting pot for various art form and artist from across India. The festival which concluded on 12th Feb 2012 was truly amazing. Though I visited only on last day of festival for couple of hours but it was truly "AN ADVENTURE" with so much to see, so much to know that  I am already looking forward to the festival to come back in 2013.
